The First Time a Sandworm Ate Me in Dune Awakening and What I Learned

I’ll never forget the first time a Sandworm got me in Dune: Awakening. I was new to the game, completely mesmerised by the massive open-world desert. I’d just found a crashed ship filled with rare loot, and I thought I was being clever sneaking up to it. I wasn’t. Within seconds, the ground erupted behind me — a titanic Sandworm exploded out of the sand, and I froze. Before I could move, I was gone.

Instant death. Backpack gone. No way to recover anything.

That moment taught me a brutal lesson: the desert in Dune: Awakening doesn’t forgive mistakes. And Sandworms? They’re the enforcers of that rule. So, if you’re just starting out, let me pass on what I’ve learned since that painful first death.

First and foremost: never stay on open sand longer than you have to. The game actually gives you a vibration meter in the middle of your screen. Treat it like a ticking time bomb. The longer you’re out there, the higher it goes — and when it hits a certain point, a worm will spawn Dune Awakening Items.

And when it does? Don’t panic — just RUN TO ROCK. Where the worm comes out is random. Sometimes it’s far away, and sometimes it’s terrifyingly close. Either way, your only chance is to reach rocky ground. Once you’re on rock, you’re safe.

Another painful surprise: dying to a worm deletes your backpack. You lose everything you were carrying — no recovery unless it’s your first death (which the game uses to teach you this mechanic). After that, every death is final.

So how do you avoid it? Here are my go-to rules:

  • Never sprint across open sand. Crouch-walking is slower, but way safer.
  • Avoid red sand areas — that’s drumsand, and it’s extra noisy.
  • Turn off shields and high-tech gear. They might look cool, but they’re a dinner bell for the worms.
  • Use the terrain. Always plan your route around rocky patches. It’s a bit like playing a platformer — jump from one safe spot to the next.

One cool trick: if you’ve picked the Trooper mentor during character creation, you get a grapple hook. That thing has saved my life more times than I can count. You can use it to pull yourself toward safety if a worm is closing in. If you didn’t choose Trooper, you can learn grappling later at Griffin’s Reach.

Looking back, I’m actually glad the worm got me that first time. It taught me how the game works, how seriously it treats its world, and how satisfying it is to survive against the odds. If you’ve been eaten a few times — don’t worry. We all have. The trick is learning from it Dune Awakening Solari.
